Thanks for the prod. I have booted the kubuntu 10.4 beta 2 live image and I do NOT observe the crash (which did occur when booting live kubuntu 9.10 image). Since I use the installed system on this laptop for critical work I can't really mess with it by upgrading to the 10.4 beta 2, but once the semester is over I will do the upgrade and report on the results. Based on the live image test I'm expecting the problem is gone.
