Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv
After upgrading from Hardy, two of the three users on my system couldn't log-in due to Xorg crashes. After entering the password, I would see the desktop and hear the login sound, and then X crashes before showing the menu bars. This is 100% repeatable. Switching to another driver resolved the issue; using the proprietary or nouveau driver works. Regardless of the logs attached (which may show various drivers) the gdm_0.log file is one of the experienced crash of this report. The relevant section is: Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x4a3248] 1: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x655ad) [0x4655ad] 2: /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x7f9ee7e83000+0xf8f0) [0x7f9ee7e928f0] 3: /lib/libc.so.6 (memcpy+0x35) [0x7f9ee6be3c65] 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so (0x7f9ee4db2000+0xfeae) [0x7f9ee4dc1eae] 5: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libshadowfb.so (0x7f9ee3560000+0x1f1d) [0x7f9ee3561f1d] 6: /usr/bin/X (miPaintWindow+0x1aa) [0x45ad1a] 7: /usr/bin/X (miWindowExposures+0xc8) [0x45b0b8] 8: /usr/bin/X (miHandleValidateExposures+0x2b) [0x5622cb] 9: /usr/bin/X (MapWindow+0x26f) [0x45788f] 10: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x30366) [0x430366] 11: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x30c3c) [0x430c3c] 12: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x261aa) [0x4261aa] 13: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x7f9ee6b7bc4d] 14: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x25d59) [0x425d59] Segmentation fault at address 0x7f9edaa74f50 Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting I could possibly get a core dump. While I can figure out how; instructions would be handy if you have them.
