Ok, to summarize my previous posts and suggested solutions from other users:
1. Installed an updated driver xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5. 2. Installed kernel from karmic 2.6.31-20. 3. Installed kernel 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic. 4. Tried various workarounds from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes in different combinations with different kernels.
