I have the nearly same issues as Gary B. I have a similar graphics card - ATI Technologies Inc M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5250] in a Thinkpad T60p. I am using Lucid with the latest upgrades as of this afternoon. Cairo dock runs fine with no OpenGL. Starting up the OpenGL Cairo Dock immediately crashes me out of X back to the login prompt.
