I for one find that my system works worse with KMS turned off. Whenever
the system tries to start X, it comletely freezes with a black screen
(so it was quite a hassle to install Lucid using the desktop iso).
Furthermore, the vesa driver doesn't even work for me - it finds no
usable modes by default and by some manual configuration (HorizSync and
VertRefresh) I can get at most 1024x768 with 8 bit color or 640x480 with
16 bit color, apparently because it detects only 832 kb of memory, and
the VideoRAM option seems to be ignored. When I set i915.modeset=1
(overriding the blacklisting) everything is fine with the intel driver -
accelerated and everything. I haven't tested it for a long time yet,
though. My system is a Dell Inspiron 510m.
