Further testing suggests that the error is only triggered by moving the mouse out of the first screen. Also it isn't possible to move it back to the first screen: the cursor flickers and is briefly displayed back on the main display then it is flickering again on the adjacent one. Afterwards, pressing a key on the keyboard seems to shutdown X.
