Thank you for the updates, madbiologist! Do you know if I could run apport-collect, although I'm not the original reporter? If so, I'll be happy to sit down with a different working system and try to figure out, how to run apport blindly. Hopefully any prompts involved should be predictable enough.
Are you saying that our issue seems not to be KMS related, as nomodeset should be forcing UMS?
