I've tried various recipes that are reputed to solve this including
this one found on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting

  sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it
exists)/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver
  sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
  sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri
xserver-xorg-core
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

So far, it looks like ubuntu 10.04 does not play nice with the graphics card
identified in sysinfo as:
    ATI Xpress 200M 5955 (PCIE)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 3091

I may just revert to 9.10 which worked perfectly. I found no problems at
all with graphics over the 5 months I ran 9.10 on this HP Presario
V2710US notebook.
