The content of xorg.conf does not matter because the
~/.config/monitors.xml file overrides the resolution set by the
xorg.conf file. I had to remove the monitors.xml file to get the proper
resolution after startup. The question is: why does the monitors.xml
file exist? This issue started happening after upgrading to Karmic from
Jaunty.

** Changed in: nvidia-settings (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => New

--
nvidia-settings does not keep resolution that it is set too and xorg.conf is
useless
