You seem to have the nvidia binary drivers installed - and they were
installed for your Xorg.0.log.old, too.  Did you install them
deliberately?  If so, did you install them using
System→Administration→Hardware Drivers, or via another method?

The nvidia binary drivers won't work without an xorg.conf.  The other
problem appears to be that you don't appear to have the vesa or fbdev
drivers installed.  They should be installed by default - did you
deliberately remove them?
