I've checked the command from Chris on Ubuntu 10.04 and Acer Aspire 5100. After wake up the computer is responsible (for example I can reboot it cleanly from virtual console with ctrl+alt+delete) but there's nothing on the computer's screen (it's black). So the command doesn't work. I think it would be helpflul to find out why the hack with bash script make the screen stop flickering.
