Workarounds seems to be:

1)
CTRL+ALT+F2 and then CTRL+ALT+F7

This sould make it work until next reboot

Add acpi=off to the boot line in grub

Also, as far as I know, the problem only happens on HP DVx machines
running 64 bit.
