Alright...I just tried with the latest Karmic kernel (2.6.31-22-generic) in lucid - there is no boot parameter needed and no flickering on the external VGA, so this problem can be solved by downgrading the kernel.
Should this bug be rather filed against the linux-image-generic package then?
