My gnome session kept crashing using the nouveau driver when surfing the web with a high graphic content site. After researching, I decided to use the proprietary drivers from Nvidia. After installing those drivers, I could not start a X session (gdm), I would get the "white screen of death" at boot, after the Ubuntu splash.
After a couple of days, I found that adding Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP" in my Device section of the xorg.conf fixed that. My gdm stopped crashing, all looked happy. Then I played a video, and when I tried to go to full screen, the player crashed as reported above. Disabling the effects under the Visual Effects tab in System - Preferences - Appearance solved the full screen problem.
