Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Easy as the summary. I'm using ubuntu 10.04, Mouse pointer is not
visible, but it still works. Indeed, it's possible to reach the upper-
left corner and display the menu.

There is always an ongoing discussion about this problem, whose link is
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/108987

Here's what I did.
1) Just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5;
2) Rebooted, entered password on the login screen. Most of the time pointer is
still visible;
3) Ubuntu login sound played untidy;
4) Gnome desktop as always but no mouse is visible. Mouse still works, but
pointer not visible.

There is a temporary work-around: use the command
$ lshw -C display

This makes the pointer to reappear, but just until the next reboot. Here below
the output of the command
  *-display UNCLAIMED
