The plot thickens:
When in the middle of "normal" computer use (i had just started flightgear, 
which then crashed, I then started it again), the same corruption appeared, 
with the same cycling behaviour, and similar error messages. I started the 
xserver again which brought nothing (I did it semi-blindly through the 
terminal) but that brought nothing (however that wiped the Xorg.0.log from the 
"crash"). Attached is the extract from kern.log, which also includes the first 
crash of flightgear, which might however have nothing to do with the graphics 
errors.
