Ok. So there are two problems in this bug - X starting in 1280x800 by default, and the 1024x768 resolution not being usable.
X not starting in 1280x800 is due to a mis-detected TV output connection, resulting in X trying to find a shared mode for the TV output & the laptop display, picking 1024x768.
