Ok so when a disk check is done then I end up with a usable system (get a more blurred horizontal set of coloured lines which goes away). Am now on 2.6.32-24 (same problems) am going to attach xorg from this bootup, dont know if it is useful as system does boot ok after the disk check. Also for your information I cancelled the disk check at 1 or 2% and it still booted OK.
