Due to hardware problem, I had to quit using the Samsung Syncmaster monitor.
I've changed it to an IBM E74 model. Since then the problem mentioned got
worst, since I could not even login to X, (I filed Bug #586090). People
helping out there suggested, just like in this bug, to install current mainline
kernel. After a lot mistakes trying to do so, I finally did. From then on, the
problem has reverted to this, the original one: I can log in again, but X
crashes just like before. Upon entering safe graphics mode, I now get this new
error message: Error: (EE) open/dev/fbo: no such file or directory.
If someone could tell me how to use the mainline kernel to facilitate further
information, I'd be glad to. Thanks.
