Any word on if the patch listed in comments #69 and #70 will work on a
Lucid kernel?

Here is how installed Lucid on the elitebook 8440p (with Intel). It is
a poor workaround, but at least it works:

1) install using the Alternate Installer CD, make sure to set the "nomodeset
nosplash" kernel options
2) after the installation is finished, choose "rescue mode" from the grub menu
(it may be necessary to pass along the nomodeset nosplash options again?)
3) when rescue mode asks you what to do, choose "Fail-safe X"
4) copy the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
5) change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nosplash
nomodeset" in /etc/default/grub
6) run update-grub

You know have a working system, albeit using the VESA Xorg driver. This
is obviously suboptimal, but it's better than nothing.
