Lucky me, I struck gold!

Here's the solution...

Within /etc/X11/xorg.conf change the following line

Virtual 1280 960

to

Virtual 1920 1200

to increase monitor resolution selections offered within the Gnome
Monitor settings.

HERE's the GOLD

Add this line

Driver "nv"

after the line

Identifier  "Configured Video Device"

The use of the nv graphics device driver and the Virtual setting lets my
old monitor trace to orgasmic highs!!!
