If you can try nouveau again, does booting with nouveau.noaccel=1 added to the kernel command line in grub fix it?
This seems to be related to this problem: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26980#c25 ** Summary changed: - random interface freeze + [GT216] random interface freeze ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #26980 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26980 ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg I have used 9.10 and earlier releases on this hardware daily with no problems, but after an upgrade to 10.04 I experience the following problem once for every several hours that I use the machine. There is no specific trigger that causes it. The symptoms are that suddenly the keyboard becomes unresponsive. This includes low-level features like activation of the CapsLock indicator light, though Alt+SysRq+o is effective. I am able to move the mouse pointer, but mouse clicks have no effect. There is no corruption of the display. I am able to SSH in to the system, and when I do I notice that xorg is at 100% CPU usage. I have found nothing in any log that indicates a problem, but perhaps you will be able to do so. This is likely related to other recent bugs such as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- ati/+bug/577236 but I have filed a separate report because my symptoms are not exactly the same as any other report. (For example, I am using neither ATI hardware nor compositing.) + + Backtrace: + 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x4a3248] + 1: /usr/bin/X (mieqEnqueue+0x1f4) [0x4a2ac4] + 2: /usr/bin/X (xf86PostMotionEventP+0xc4) [0x47cea4] + 3: /usr/bin/X (xf86PostMotionEvent+0xa9) [0x47d049] + 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so (0x7fc548b98000+0x39d4) [0x7fc548b9b9d4] + 5: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so (0x7fc548b98000+0x5f48) [0x7fc548b9df48] + 6: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x6fca7) [0x46fca7] + 7: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x11d1f3) [0x51d1f3] + 8: /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x7fc54ddd3000+0xf8f0) [0x7fc54dde28f0] + 9: /lib/libc.so.6 (ioctl+0x7) [0x7fc54cb8b157] + 10: /lib/libdrm.so.2 (drmIoctl+0x28) [0x7fc54b13c5b8] + 11: /lib/libdrm.so.2 (drmCommandWrite+0x1b) [0x7fc54b13c83b] + 12: /lib/libdrm_nouveau.so.1 (0x7fc54aafe000+0x2f7d) [0x7fc54ab00f7d] + 13: /lib/libdrm_nouveau.so.1 (nouveau_bo_map_range+0xfc) [0x7fc54ab011bc] + 14: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so (0x7fc54ad04000+0x5d97) [0x7fc54ad09d97] + 15: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libexa.so (0x7fc549c59000+0x8320) [0x7fc549c61320] + 16: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x15a874) [0x55a874] + 17: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0xd20b9) [0x4d20b9] + 18: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x30c3c) [0x430c3c] + 19: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x261aa) [0x4261aa] + 20: /lib/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x7fc54cacbc4d] + 21: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x25d59) [0x425d59] + + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Tue May 25 11:38:05 2010 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory MachineType: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
