Yep. That's what I do, too. As soon as the grub menu appears I move the
arrow to the item I want to boot and press e for edit. Then I add (or
subtract) what I want and press ctr+x. I think your method would work
too, though. The method Jamie and I use is just for one boot and the one
you suggest would continue to set the option every time you boot until
you change it back.

With regard to which /var/log/gdm files, I would open a terminal and do
a "sudo ls -ltr /var/log/gdm" and look at the bottom of the output for
the files that were created since the boot. The you can copy with "sudo
cp /var/log/gdm/FILE ~/Desktop/" or some such.

Jamie, please remember to post your upstart and gdm versions so your all
your logs can be matched up with the software version you are running.
Please forgive me if you included it above and I missed it. I see that
you are running the same version of plymouth I am. (Dino's running
maverick and has a newer version).
