Public bug reported:

173.14.27-0ubuntu1 fails on upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 beta

Even though I realise that 10.10 is still beta and that the nvidia
drivers are closed source, the bug results in an unusable system that
should be resolved automatically.

Also mentioned here:
X server 1.9 crash with 173.14.27
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=153963

1) Fail resulted in a hanged system and a black screen of text

2) FailsafeX did not kick in until I logged in on TTY1 and issued a
shutdown. Way beyond a normal user, and only the result of numerous
attempts at rebooting and issuing various commands.

3) Automatic recovery to the nouveau driver would be better in this case
e.g. nvidia binary FAIL > nouveau FAIL > vesa

4) As it is a binary driver there is no guarantee that nvidia will
release an updated driver meaning that 10.04 could be the last release
for older systems which need decent 3D support stuck with 173 series
cards

5) I've heard that nouveau does have some 3D support, is there any
chance this will be seen in 10.10

6) Administration > Additional drivers allows the install of the 173
drivers even though they do not work with xorg 1.9
