I have an old IBM i1300-1171 Thinkpad with a Silicon Motion SM712 LynxEM+ video
controller with the same problem.
It appears that the video memory is overrunning and causing horizontal
displacement of some pixels after being upgraded to ubuntu 10.04.
I have tried the boot options of vga=normal and nomodeset with no luck. If I
try vga=788 the desktop never shows.
These are the only things tried so far.
If you need log files and such I will try to locate them but may need some help
with their locations.
Thanks

WTS
