I made a copy of the 'ati' folder that I found at /usr/share/ati and placed it 
in my own 'Documents' folder.  Then I renamed the original folder: 
        sudo mv ati ati_old
Then the system allowed me to complete the installation of the current fglrx 
driver.  I'll reboot and see what happens.  Wish me luck!
