This has happened to me twice today. Both times it seemed to start while in Firefox, but switching to other programs or closing them just seemed to 'spread' the corruption to the entire desktop. Tried closing and restarting apps, going into Gnome Appearance and changing fonts, switching to Virtual Terminal and back; only fix was to restart X or computer.
