Ok, I've reproduced it - pressing a volume up/down media key kills the left button on either a keyboard with a built-in touch pad or on a standard Microsoft USB mouse. Tested on two computers running 32-bit Maverick, one of which was a clean install, one an upgrade from Lucid.
