I also have a TravelMate 6592G and a recent Ubuntu 10.4 update cause this issue. Upon boot, I get the Ubuntu splash screen briefly, then it goes to the console based login prompt. After a few minutes, X server finally kicks in and displays the graphical login prompt. Everything is normal after that. I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04.
