Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release: 10.04 xorg: Installed: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status When xord calls gdm to create the desktop, and login is successful, sometimes gdm fails to restore the desktop. I have had it fail completely providing no desktop other than the wall paper, when I had to boot using the keyboard three magic keys; I have had it restore the panels but not the desktop folder display -- annoying, but work around- able since I don't carry much on my desktop; but what really caused me to send this in was the tendency to drop my lower panel, which, while only a nuisance, is something it shouldn't do. I suspect the problem may be in the initiator for panel, but have no way of really knowing. While gdm is one of the best desktop managers I have ever encountered, since it is the default for this system, it definitely needs polishing. I am not running 10.10 because I use Nvidia-96 driver and it is broken. I have reported that bug, but have received no advice that it has been fixed. It appears that the driver is not broken, but the xorg interface to it comes up with an undefined symbol, which effectively breaks it. Also, there are some features in 10.10 that are not ready for people. I've reported the ones I found.
