I can't confirm that the freezes disappear if the nouveau driver is used. I think the crucial question is what has changed from (k)ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (xorg, apic, ...). Keep in mind that the problem has been reported by people who uses different graphics cards and even different distros!
