The problem appears to be something wrong with the EDID information supplied by the monitor. You can see that xrandr reports your monitor as having dimensions of 0x0mm which obviously is wrong. Elsewhere it lists it as 300 x 225 mm, but presumably this is enough to confuse it.
Note that these days resolution selection is done in the kernel, not by X. In fact 'xrandr' is just a simple command line tool that sends the resolution switching commands through X to the kernel, it doesn't actually perform the mode switches itself - this is done by kernel mode selection (KMS). I'll refile the bug against the kernel. ** Description changed: The system (Deskpro EN p733) is connected to a Philips 107B monitor. When I try to change the resolution, ubuntu does not recognise the display type, but it does offer several resolution variants. If I select 1024*768 (which suits my old eyes much better than the original) everything works fine - until I reboot. Then I get a screen which seems to have versions of the display (slightly displaced) on top of each other. The computer worked fine at 1024*768 with Windows 2000. Disconcertingly if then I try one of the safe variants of login, I can eventually get in, BUT my wireless connection is lost. This sounds to me like the back end end of some peripheral control file has been lost when the system shuts down. + + (II) intel(0): DPMS capabilities: StandBy Suspend Off; RGB/Color Display + (II) intel(0): redX: 0.625 redY: 0.340 greenX: 0.310 greenY: 0.592 + (II) intel(0): blueX: 0.150 blueY: 0.063 whiteX: 0.281 whiteY: 0.311 + (II) intel(0): Supported established timings: + (II) intel(0): 640x...@60hz + (II) intel(0): 640x...@67hz + (II) intel(0): 640x...@75hz + (II) intel(0): 800x...@56hz + (II) intel(0): 800x...@60hz + (II) intel(0): 800x...@75hz + (II) intel(0): 832x...@75hz + (II) intel(0): 1024x...@87hz (interlaced) + (II) intel(0): 1024x...@60hz + (II) intel(0): 1024x...@70hz + (II) intel(0): 1024x...@75hz + (II) intel(0): Manufacturer's mask: 0 + (II) intel(0): Supported detailed timing: + (II) intel(0): clock: 107.8 MHz Image Size: 300 x 225 mm + (II) intel(0): h_active: 1280 h_sync: 1360 h_sync_end 1468 h_blank_end 1684 h_border: 0 + (II) intel(0): v_active: 1024 v_sync: 1025 v_sync_end 1030 v_blanking: 1067 v_border: 0 + (II) intel(0): Supported detailed timing: + (II) intel(0): clock: 25.2 MHz Image Size: 300 x 225 mm + (II) intel(0): h_active: 640 h_sync: 656 h_sync_end 752 h_blank_end 800 h_border: 0 + (II) intel(0): v_active: 400 v_sync: 413 v_sync_end 415 v_blanking: 450 v_border: 0 + (II) intel(0): EDID (in hex): + (II) intel(0): 00ffffffffffff00410c0068a0ee0000 + (II) intel(0): 030701002c1e17aae80692a0574f9726 + (II) intel(0): 10484f377e0000000000000000000000 + (II) intel(0): 0000000000001f2a009451002b40506c + (II) intel(0): 15002ce110000000d50980a020903210 + (II) intel(0): 1060d2002ce11000001c000000000000 + (II) intel(0): 00000000000000000000000000000000 + (II) intel(0): 000000000000000000000000000000dc + (II) intel(0): EDID vendor "PHL", prod id 26624 + (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: 1280x1024 Warning: We only handle separate sync. + (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: Ignoring tiny 0x0 mode + (II) intel(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: Ignoring tiny 0x0 mode + (II) intel(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines: + (II) intel(0): Modeline "1280x1024"x0.0 107.83 1280 1360 1468 1684 1024 1025 1030 1067 -hsync -vsync (64.0 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "640x400"x0.0 25.17 640 656 752 800 400 413 415 450 -hsync +vsync (31.5 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x0.0 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x0.0 36.00 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync (35.2 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "640x480"x0.0 31.50 640 656 720 840 480 481 484 500 -hsync -vsync (37.5 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "640x480"x0.0 30.24 640 704 768 864 480 483 486 525 -hsync -vsync (35.0 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "640x480"x0.0 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "1024x768"x0.0 78.75 1024 1040 1136 1312 768 769 772 800 +hsync +vsync (60.0 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "1024x768"x0.0 75.00 1024 1048 1184 1328 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (56.5 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "1024x768"x0.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "1024x768"x0.0 44.90 1024 1032 1208 1264 768 768 772 817 interlace +hsync +vsync (35.5 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "832x624"x0.0 57.28 832 864 928 1152 624 625 628 667 -hsync -vsync (49.7 kHz) + (II) intel(0): Modeline "800x600"x0.0 49.50 800 816 896 1056 600 601 604 625 +hsync +vsync (46.9 kHz) + (--) intel(0): Chipset: "i815" + + regards Peter ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 CheckboxCommand: resolution_test CheckboxDescription: - This display is using the following resolution: - - $output - - Is this acceptable for your display?
