Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
I have a machine based on an Asus K8V-MX motherboard which until recently was running Ubuntu Studio 10.04. Under 10.04, video was working fine. The other day, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio 10.10 on this machine. After the install, the screen stayed black after boot, no login screen, no virtual consoles - the only way to reboot was using Alt+SysRq. I used the rescue mode to install the openssh-server so I could analyse the problem further. The next time round, I remotely logged into the machine and noticed that Xorg was using 99% of the CPU. Killing Xorg would result in a total hang of the machine. I then proceeded to force the VESA driver, which gave me a working X. Further investigation showed up https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/660240 in which installing the latest driver version from http://www.openchrome.org helped. Hence, I tried that. Result: After downloading the latest openchrome driver (which is version 0.2.904), X was fully operable again. Looking at the Ubuntu 10.10 package for xserver-xorg-video-openchrome it appears to be version 0.2.904+svn842 - hence, it looks like the additional SVN patch added to the Ubuntu package has introduced some regression causing the driver to hang on this chipset.
