Further to this - package installed updates this evening. X now
crashes immediately on bootup to black scree with unresponsive mouse
pointer. This is more severe - I can't Putty into the account after the
crash, which I could previously (before any fixes applied)

Test results as requested.
Machine is Compaq P2A with Pentium 4 at 2GHz, 2GB RAM, Ubuntu 10.04
desktop, 2.6.32-24-generic Kernel, Gnome 2.30.2, 82845G/GL graphic chip.
I followed the fix instuctions today to install Chris
Wilson/Christopher Rogers' legacy driver package & disable KMS.
Installation went smoothly.
Unfortunately, had another graphics crash after about 6 hours use.
That's typical of what I've been seeing previous to the fix.
I had no problems with the previous LTS release.
Thanks for the work,
Ian
