Thank you Tom. Problem solved. I double clicked on loudspeaker icon at
the top of screen and set the sliders to represent my audio setup. as
per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting. Simple if
pointed in the right direction. many thanks. cheers Dick
