Question #77254 on Ubuntu changed: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/77254
Tom proposed the following answer: If you can't get hold of an original or OEM version of the Vista Cd/dvd then i would be really tempted to find a decent pirated copy but doing so runs the risk of several problems. Depending on who made the pirated copy you might be getting a version stuffed full of viruses and malware even before starting using it. This might be mitigated by the fact of not using it as a full install Cd, perhaps the elemnts needed by your Vista would be the ok parts. Also downloading and owning a pirated copy is bad for ethical reasons and may also cause problems with the long arm of microsquish. Really i think if we're even considering this option then it might be worth find a trusted local computer shop to do the repairs to Vista for you. They will probably ask you to backup your own data first and doing so onto an external hard-drive would seem pretty smart anyway. Note that Ubuntu can happily copy files and can usually use them itself anyway so Ubuntu can be used to dig around for your scattered files/templates etc in Windows and then either copy them to external drive or copy them onto cd/dvds. Often computer shops will avoid advertising that they can work with linux because it's been found to scare some people away, microsquish Fear-Uncertainty&Doubt does have an affect on people. Anyway, many computer shops or tech support whizzes will be much happier working with a system that has linux in the mix because it makes it all much easier for them :) I hope something here helps!
