actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/firefox-3.5 /usr/bin/firefox
the 3.5 is not an update but a seperate app, to launch it you run
/usr/bin/firefox-3.5 so if you link it to /usr/bin/firefox then it will
take the place of the original version which you have removed
