Larry Jordan proposed the following answer:
Use the 'spadmin' (see OpenOffice Help -> Index -> fonts -> adding
under Unix). I find it at:
/usr/lib/openoffice/programs/spadmin
It will bring up a GUI that has a button for adding fonts.
