Tom proposed the following answer:
During bootup do you get a menu with lots of options for booting into
Ubuntu? The 2nd option should have "recovery mode" near the end of it's
line and this gives quite a few options worth running through about once
a month. In this case "Clear some space" and "Fix broken packages" are
liely to help before choosing the "Resume normal boot" option ;)
