Tom proposed the following answer: With the cd that you have got could you try booting up from it. Hopefully it will get you to a menu with "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine" as the top option. If not this guide might help https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD Choosing the option "Try Ubuntu ..." should get you to a working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session". Also the firefox on the top taskbar should be able to get you into here.
