actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
sudo mv /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-
security_main_binary-i386_Packages /home/$USER
then run: sudo apt-get update
If you get no joy, move it back with:
sudo mv /home/$USER/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-
security_main_binary-i386_Packages /var/lib/apt/lists/
