Hi Robert,
at first you should try to manually restart the display-manger, i assume you
use the gdm (It's a Ubuntu right?) via
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
after Login via TTy (e.g. ctrl-alt-1). If that doesn't work try to look up the
error in your x-server-log /var/log/Xorg.0.log .
Or you just go and remove kde via
aptitude remove --purge kde
After restart, your Displaymanager should show up again. (If KDE is
really the problem...)
