actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
Recovery mode is reachable by rebooting, when grub loads, press ESC
select recovery mode for any kernel then select root, you will now have
a command line interce
You can then type
cd /home/<user name you login with here>
ls -a
You will then see all files, you can then rename the folders with
mv .gnome .gnome_old
for example, there will be others too, you want to rename all the
.gnome* folders and .gconf* folders
Once all renamed run:
shutdown -r now
and the system will reboot
