Tom proposed the following answer:
Umm is there someone on your network doing a lot of file-transfers
to/from your machine?
When you reboot your machine do you get a boot menu with several options
for booting into Ubuntu? The 2nd one should have "recovery mode" near
the end of it's line. That should lead to a menu with several options
worth running but aoid the "Drop to Root shell" for now. If you do
choose that one then typing "reboot" on the command-line should get you
back.
Good luck with this

Tom
