Dale Jefferson proposed the following answer:
The most common thing is that the sound is muted, type alsamixer into
the command line and make sure all the volumes are at max and nothing is
muted, m toggles mute.
Any reason you are not using the latest version of Kubuntu, 9.04 it will
have a newer kernel with better driver support.
