In the windows world, one computer in a local network should function as the computer browser while the others should have the computer browser service turned off. My network generally runs fine with my Windows 2000 server acting as the computer browser. Today, I noticed something puzzling. I had my laptop connected to the network and switched it off after a while. Now, the laptop is the only computer I own that has the workgroup name "workgroup" - I never got around to changing it to match the rest of the house. What I noticed today was that if I try to connect to Places->Network->Windows Network, I saw both my household workgroups and my laptop "workgroup" listed. Viewed from my XP machine, only the household workgroup is visible, which should be the case since the Vista laptop had been off for almost an hour. Also, I cannot get a list of the computers in the house. I get "Unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" although it doesn't tell me what it thinks the server should be. It occurs to me that either Ubuntu is acting as a computer browser, or it has a cached set NETBIOS related info that has become stale. Restarting the server did not change what Ubuntu said was on the network, although the XP PC still shows the correct information. Restarting Ubuntu removed the extraneous "workgroup" computer (the laptop) but still gives me an error when I try to connect to the server.
