MD5 tests check the data you downloaded is good as well as allows you to test
the CD once booted. The data may have been mangled in transmission or burning
and this needs to be checked. The data yuo downloaded may have "completed" but
may be missing the last 20Mb of data which can cause issues.
Check the ISO file you downloaded using:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
If all is well can you please provide the output of:
sudo lshw -C network
