I think of no, but I don't know how to test it. How can I downgrade just gdm?

After loading the kernel, I just ended up with a black screen. Rebooted using the recovery kernel to check for problems. No package problems found. Unable to start failsafeX. Rebooted back to standard kernel, repeat black screen when I should get GDM presented to me. Used Ctrl-Alt-1. Used startx from home-directory, got gnome shell started, but no Adwaita theme. Seems to have quite alot of themes missing from tweak-gnome-settings. Wallpaper is not the usual blue with vertical-panelling but a flat light blue wallpaper. Black panel at the top works fine. Dock works fine. window title-bars seem a low-resolution gtk2 variety.
