I am the developer of both the original package and the new dependency. The heart of the new dependency is code that has been taken from the original package, and made into a standalone package that command line scripts and Python GUI programs can use.
In other words, the only reason the new dependency exists is to allow other developers to take advantage of code that I already developed that provides a feature found in many programs. In this particular case, that is the ability to open the user's preferred file manager with one or more files highlighted in their containing directory. The rest of the changes in the Rapid Photo Downloader package arise from high priority bug fixes the Rapid Photo Downloader community has been requesting for some years, such as the ability to fit the program's main window onto small screens such as 1024x768, the handling of daylight savings, and the proper handling of iOS devices. I know they are high priority fixes because apart from bug reports, I surveyed users and these are the changes they said they wanted to see done. As well there are many other small fixes that would make no sense not to include, e.g. keeping up with recent changes in xsettings when running on high DPI screens. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Studio Bugs, which is subscribed to rapid-photo-downloader in Ubuntu. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu Studio Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1963694 Title: [FFe] Update rapid-photo-downloader for Python 3.10 compatibility Status in rapid-photo-downloader package in Ubuntu: In Progress Bug description: [ Explanation ] rapid-photo-downloader 0.9.31 has been released for compatiblity with Python 3.10. Unfortunately, it also has new dependencies, including an entirely new package (in progress, showinfilemanager https://github.com/damonlynch/showinfilemanager). As such, these new dependencies are to enable at least one new feature in rapid-photo- downloader. As it stands now, rapid-photo-downloader will fail to run in jammy due to the python 3.10 update. Original Bug Report: To run Rapid Photo Downloader with Python 3.10 (now the default in jammy), the rapid-photo-downloader package must be updated to version 0.9.31. If it is not, it will crash at startup. I am the developer of Rapid Photo Downloader and I am happy work with Ubuntu packagers to get this done. The volunteer Debian packager has not responded to package update requests for some months. I think it reasonable to assume he will not likely be able to contribute before jammy is released.
