Ubuntu and Gnome(3) use a wallpaper config file, placed in
/usr/share/gnome-background-properties/, which tells where the
wallpapers can be found. So, for both of those OSs, you could place the
wallpapers anywhere, as long as the config file points to the files in
that location.

With the recent changes, ubuntustudio-wallpapers supports xfce, unity
and gnome(3)
